The story of this extraordinary dessert began in 1978, thanks to the intuition and genius of master pastry chef Carmine Marzuillo, a native of Sorrento. His desire was simple yet revolutionary: to create a dessert in which the lemon would be the true star—in flavor, in scent, and in spirit.
Thus was born a spoon dessert made of sponge cake soaked in lemon liqueur, delicate cream, and a citrus glaze: a combination that left everyone speechless.
Its breakthrough came at the national conference of the Chefs’ Association, where the Delizia won the gold medal, and it later gained fame thanks to the restaurant “Franceschiello,” run by Carmine’s brother.
From there, its fame spread far and wide. The Delizia al Limone became a symbol of the Sorrento Peninsula and an ambassador of Campania’s culinary heritage to the world. From the alleys of Sorrento to the restaurants of Tokyo, everyone was searching for the recipe. And along with it, limoncello—which was just emerging in those years—spread everywhere, becoming a true icon.
After all, Sorrento is world-famous for its lemons: juicy, fragrant, and intensely colored. Among them all, the Sfusato Amalfitano stands out—a lemon with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, characterized by its elongated shape and peel rich in essential oils, cultivated with love and dedication on the natural terraces of the coast.
